Richard James Haley

Mr. Richard J. Haley, 79 of Bad Axe, passed away on Thursday morning, August 28, 2014 at the Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. Richard was born on July 5, 1935 in Bad Axe, to the late William and Vera (Pepper) Haley. He married Mary Gucwa on June 15, 1963 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners. Richard was a 1953 graduate of Elkton High School. He was a self employed carpenter in Huron County for all his life, before retiring in 1997. Richard enjoyed watching pro football, playing cards and reading. He liked to travel with his loving wife, Mary, especially checking out local crops and their progress. Richard also enjoyed visiting with family and friends. Richard is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary of Bad Axe; one brother, Keith Haley and his wife, Hope of Sebewaing; two sisters, Mary Ann Thick of Pigeon, Judy McIntyre and her husband, Eugene of Bad Axe; one brother-in-law, David Gucwa and his wife, Barbara of Schaumburg, IL; nieces and nephews, Kenny (Cathy) Haley, Brenda (Kevin) Kuhl, Pam (Mark) Fournier, Michael (Holly) Thick, Carrie (Stephan) Shaltonis, Patricia (Brian) Krajewski, Joel (Cindy) Thick, Scott (Rachelle) McIntyre, Shelley (Kevin) Langley, Shawn (June) McIntyre, Christine (John) Matijevic and their children, Madeline and Lilly, Tom (Sherry) White; many great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Harold Thick and Thomas Gucwa; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ted and Della Gucwa. Mass of Christian burial will be 11 am, Saturday, August 30 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church of Good Shepherd Parish, Ubly. Rev. Charles Hammond, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly on Friday from 2:00-9:00 pm and Saturday from 10:00-11:00 am at the church only. There will be a parish vigil service Friday evening at 7:30 pm at the funeral home. In Lieu of flowers, memorials have been requested to the St. Columbkille Cemetery Fund or the donor’s choice.
