Mrs. Irene Marie (Salowitz) Schmidt passed away unexpectedly on January 8, 2021.
She was born on June 30, 1938 to Bertha (Klama) Salowitz-Kucharczyk and Sylvester Salowitz. After graduating from Ubly High School in 1957, Irene married her loving and devoted husband, James S. Schmidt on August 2, 1958 at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly. They raised two daughters during their 62 years of marriage.
Irene worked at the seatbelt factory in Ubly. She was then employed at various businesses in Bad Axe, including Ben Franklin, Town and Country Bridal Shop, City Cleaners, Robert’s IGA and the Holiday Inn Express. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Irene loved family and was particularly devoted to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Irene beamed confidence in everything she set her mind to in life and embraced her sass each step of the way. She was loved by everyone who knew her and they knew by her love, they were considered family.
Irene is survived by her husband James S. Schmidt; two daughters, Linda Schmidt and Caroline (Schmidt) Gornowicz; two granddaughters, Alyssa Gornowicz and Kristyna (Thomas) Robinson; three great grandchildren, Ryan, Maddison and Evelyne Robinson; three sisters, Beatrice Martinez of Milan, Susan Weisner of Harbor Beach, Marlene (Elliott) Kolomak of Marlette; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Alonzo and Helen Decker of South Carolina; sister-in-law, Joan Schmidt of California; several nieces and nephews and extended family.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Ernest Kucharczyk; one brother, Leonard Salowitz; four children, Joseph, Kenneth, Anna and Theresa Schmidt.
